Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

Overview

Arashiyama is a scenic district on the western edge of Kyoto, and its bamboo grove is one of the most famous natural sights in all of Japan. Walking into the towering green stalks of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove feels like stepping into another world — sunlight filters through the canopy in thin shafts, and the wind makes the bamboo trunks knock together with a soft, hollow sound that has been designated one of Japan's "100 soundscapes."

The grove itself is a path (the Bamboo Grove Path) that connects the grounds of Tenryu-ji temple to the main street of the district, but the surrounding area offers a full day of sightseeing: a river bridge, a hillside of temples, an island park, and a famous monkey park.

Practical Info

Access: Take the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama Station (about 15 minutes), then walk 10 minutes to the grove. Alternatively, the Randen tram from central Kyoto stops at Arashiyama Station, right at the edge of the district.

Hours & entry: The bamboo grove itself is open 24 hours and free to enter, though the connecting temple and garden paths follow their own hours (usually 8:30 AM–5:30 PM).

Good to know: Because the grove is free and open all day, it draws enormous crowds by late morning. The walk from one end of the grove to the other takes about 15–20 minutes.

Location

Must-See

  • The Bamboo Grove — the towering grove itself, best experienced early in the morning when the light rakes between the stalks.
  • Togetsukyo Bridge — Arashiyama's elegant wooden-span bridge over the Katsura River, with the mountains behind it. Gorgeous at sunset.
  • Tenryu-ji Temple — a UNESCO World Heritage Zen temple whose garden blends directly into the bamboo grove.
  • Iwatayama Monkey Park (¥550 entry) — a hillside park where wild Japanese macaques roam freely, with panoramic views over Kyoto.
  • Jojakko-ji — a smaller, quieter temple with a lovely moss garden and one of the best autumn views in the district.

Tips

  • Arrive before 8:00 AM — you will have the bamboo grove nearly to yourself; by 10 AM it is shoulder to shoulder.
  • Rent a bicycle — Arashiyama is flat and spread out; bikes let you cover the grove, the river, and the temples in a relaxed half day.
  • Combine with the Sagano Railway — the scenic "Romantic Train" along the Hozugawa River gorge is spectacular, especially in autumn.
  • Do not feed the monkeys at Iwatayama, and keep food hidden in your bag.
  • Pair the visit with a boat ride on the Hozugawa River, a popular downstream rafting trip.

Local tip: The bamboo grove is beautiful in the rain — the water makes the green even deeper and keeps most visitors away. A light drizzle is the secret to crowd-free photos.
