Best Time to Visit Kyoto

Spring (March — May)

The most popular season. Cherry blossoms bloom from late March to mid April, turning the city into a pink wonderland. Top spots include the Philosopher's Path, Maruyama Park, and the Arashiyama riverside. Book accommodation 6+ months in advance — prices double during bloom.

May brings pleasant weather (15–22°C) with fewer crowds. Late April to early May is Golden Week — one of Japan's busiest travel periods. Avoid if possible.

Summer (June — August)

Hot and humid (30–35°C, high humidity). The rainy season (tsuyu) runs mid-June to mid-July. Despite the heat, summer brings Gion Matsuri in July — Japan's grandest festival with massive decorated floats parading through the city.

Tip: Early mornings and evenings are the best times to explore in summer. Carry a hand towel and stay hydrated. Many temples have shaded garden paths that offer relief from the heat.

Autumn (September — November)

The second peak season. Autumn leaves (momiji) peak from mid-November to early December. The colors are spectacular at Tofuku-ji, Eikan-do, and Kiyomizu-dera. Night illuminations at several temples add a magical atmosphere. September is still warm (typhoon risk) but October–November are ideal.

Winter (December — February)

Surprisingly excellent. Fewer tourists, cold but clear skies (2–10°C), and the occasional snow-dusted temple. Winter illuminations continue into early January. Prices drop significantly outside New Year's week. The misty mornings create a moody, atmospheric experience at temples like Fushimi Inari.

Periods to Avoid

  • Golden Week (late April — early May): National holiday, extremely crowded and expensive
  • Obon (mid-August): Another national holiday, busy and hot
  • New Year (Dec 31 — Jan 3): Many shops and restaurants close, temples are packed
  • Peak sakura week (early April): Accommodation prices skyrocket, book months ahead

Best overall months: Late October (autumn colors starting, comfortable weather, moderate crowds) and late March (early sakura, before peak) offer the best balance of beauty, weather, and manageable tourism.
